The Other Charleston: Great Hotels in Charleston, West Virginia

Author: Alice W

West Virginia’s charming capital of Charleston is a modern city that still manages to retain its small-town appeal.

The city was founded on the adjoining banks of the rivers Elk and Kanawha in 1788. Then called Fort Lee, it officially changed its name to Charleston in 1787, and has since become West Virginia’s center for politics, business, and education. The city is also home to many of West Virginia’s best parks and nature trails, historical buildings, and cultural festivals.

Charleston enjoys four distinct and beautiful seasons, and is an enjoyable place to visit for pleasure or to conduct business in. There are many attractive hotel choices in Charleston for all kinds of tastes and budgets.

The Ramada West Virginia is not just an excellent hotel, it is also ideal for holding events and conventions. The Ramada Conference Center has 12,150 square feet of space, and there are adjoining meeting rooms for smaller get-togethers. The hotel offers full catering services to match your every requirement. The Ramada also provides guests with a 24-hour business center, and a courtesy van to take you the financial district or to the airport.

Just minutes from downtown, you can find the Wingate by Wyndham — another great option for business travelers. Their rooms are not just comfortable, they are also furnished with a home office — containing a two-line phone, a writing desk, an ergonomic work chair, and a laptop-sized safe to store your valuables in.

When visiting Charleston for a lengthy vacation or even just a quick getaway (be sure to check out http://discovercharlestonwv.com/ to see what’s on in Charleston during your visit), the Hampton Inn Charleston Southridge is the perfect place. The Hampton offers the most comfortable hotel beds and a breakfast buffet that will make you come back for seconds. Just moved from Charleston, SC to Leesburg VA area. Did I make a good choice?
I have been living in Charleston, SC for 11 years now or was. I went there for college and didn’t leave but never officially chose the area as a place to settle. Though I have been there for many years the job market is just not there for me and it is too seasonal. I have been working in retail management and then got kind of stuck in the food and beverage for a couple years. Im 29 single and want to settle down with a good career job. Relatives of mine recently offered me free housing with them near Leesburg, VA and I took up that offer and just moved there last week without a job lined up. Im hoping that being close to the DC area will open up more steady career opportunities for me. However, now that Im here Im looking at the costs of rent, costs of housing to own, and soon to be increased monthly cost of gas due to constant commutes and Im wondering if I really did make the best decision to move up here instead of staying in a town like Charleston, SC. Ive only been here for 5 days now and already Im a bit homesick and worried as I have to drive 20 min to the nearest fast food and 45min to engage socially it seems. In charleston, I had friends and places within 10 min of me. I think its good to get away for a bit but would you have moved away like I did or just stayed there and continued searching for better jobs? Is the job market really any better up here? Thanks for your input!
