Retail Management Careers – More Than Just A Retail Job
Author: Lisa Jenkins
The manager of a retail store is the person who is in charge of scheduling employees, supervising shifts, and/or dealing with customer complaints. A retail management job pays better than a position like cashiering, and offers more power, which some people may find to be very attractive. Becoming a manager isn’t easy, but it is a possible goal to achieve if you love working in the retail industry.
To get a retail management job you first need experience. If you haven’t worked at the store in the past, you must have prior experience with management at another store. Otherwise, you need to work your way up the ranks from a lower position, like cashier. This process allows the current management to become familiar with you and your work habits.
If you have your eye on a particular store and you also have the management experience to get hired, you also need to make sure that there is a position open for you. If there is not, taking a lower position at the same store may work in your benefit when the next manager leaves. Not only will you know right away when there is a vacancy, but you will also allow the store management to become familiar with you and allow them the chance to consider you for management from the beginning.
Working your way up from the bottom may sound tedious (and it can be), but it can also be viewed as an audition and a learning experience. If you intend to become a manager, than consider the rules that you are supposed to be following in your current position. If you stick to the rules correctly and gently guide your fellow employees toward the same, you will stick out as a leader and as someone who can follow directions.
Gently guiding your co-workers may prove difficult, but this is not the time to turn to management for help. Suggest ways that they can follow the rules without trying to force them, and set a good example by following the rules yourself. These are both great ways to show that you have leadership potential and that you are dedicated to doing things right for the company.
If you want to be a manager, it also does not hurt to talk to current management about it. Let them know that you are interested in a position with more responsibility, and they may be willing to work with you through special training or offer you positions that allow you to show them that you are trustworthy and responsible.
People who want to be retail managers may be taken through a training program. These programs can involve many different things, but usually help you become better acquainted with the specific rules for your company as well as policies and procedures that managers need to know. A management program may also help you to become more familiar with leadership strategies and techniques so that you can function better within the company when the time comes for you to take control.
Becoming a manager in a retail store can be a challenge, but if you are ready to be challenged and are interested in a leadership position that will give you better pay and more responsibility, then management is a good place to look. Work hard, but work smart, too, and you will soon be able to set yourself apart from your coworkers as someone who steps forward, does what needs to be done, and is willing to work hard to succeed.

What is it like to work as an accountant? Are you happy in your workplace? your life? Thank you foryourcomment
As an accountant, have you had to deal with management that have tried to cook the books? If you had another chance, would you be in the accounting profession again? Do you feel like the industry is still an honest profession? What are your daily responsibilities? If one had a masters in accountancy, bachelors in accounting and a bachelors in business administration, how would that translate into job openings? Could one make a good living with those degrees? Is it hard to move up the ranks? Are there a lot of office politics in your corporation? How is the office culture in those large accounting firms? KPMG, Anderson, Pricewater coopers etc… Is it hard to find an entry level position..Is it hard to find a job working for the IRS… In the accounting industry, if you could pick any entity to work for, which entity would you pick? A corporation, IRS, auditing? etc..Anything about your life as an accountant would be helpful . Thank you for every one of your comments..THANK YOU
That’s a long question and will differ for everyone and their attitude towards their work. Also, accountants will specialize in different areas and again have different types of work. The management I deal with is very strict about being sure the books are according to GAAP and the company is audited by PWC each year. The industry as a whole is honest. There will always be someone in the world who is out for themselves, but more and more restrictions are being put in place.
Daily responsibilities include working with the IRS to determine the proper amount of taxes for the company to pay. This means going to the field personnel in response to a question by the IRS to determine what the expenditures were for. A lot of paperwork.
Job openings are good for the credentials you have as long as your grades are good to go with them as well. Having the paper but not the grades won’t cut it.
Yes, you can make a good living. Entry level accountants are running around $36K and that depends on what state, etc. As you work your way up, you can break the $100K ceiling.
Moving up in the ranks depends on your work ethics, job performance, etc. There’s always mobility in a larger organization, not so in a smaller one.
Yes, office politics are everywhere and more so in a larger corporation.
Office culture – the younger accountants tend to stick together, eat lunch together, socialize outside of work, etc. Teamwork is a key to success here.
In the big firms, you can get in an entry level position if you have the good grades from a good school. Most recruiters are looking for 3.5 or better GPAs.
The IRS is going to be easier to get the job. Their hours are better and their pay is becoming much more competitive.
I did work for a large corporation as well as a small one. I like the large one better because there are more benefits, retirement, health coverage, dental, etc. In a smaller company, you’ll have greater diversification but it will be harder for you to take time off since no one is there to back you up.
I’m glad I’m a CPA and have had the chance to work for both large and small companies as well as PWC. It has helped me a lot over the years with a number of things and I’ve learned a lot more than I ever thought I would. If you have a love of numbers and like to work things out, you’ll do great.

Thank you very much!
I think your resume is too responsibilities focused and isn’t providing the reader with a clear grasp of how you have impacted the organizations at which you have worked. Many of your bullet points seem to stop short of telling the whole story – something that could be resolved by including more quantifiable achievements. For example, when you say
“Developed a system to track tanker’s movements from the point of origin to destination.”
I would like to know how this impacted the company. Did it increase tanker availability or reduce costs? Are there metrics that speak to the impact?
I would take second look at all of your bullets and ask yourself, “Does this communicate an accomplishment or a responsibility? Am I telling the reader how this achievement positively effected the company?”
I will attach a link to my blog, which has quite a few good resume writing tips. I think you might find it helpful.
Best of luck in the job search!

If you would not trust this, please give me a heads up on something that will work??
I did google the company – but the company is suposedly based in London and does not show up on a US search. I tried Yahoo International, UK and Ireland, no go, nothing good or bad. I did however search the bank the cashier’s check is drawn on, and it does exsist.
Run for your life.
In my opinion, it’s a total scam.
In every con game, there has to be a “sting”, a time when they actually ask you for money. Up until you hand over cash, you can always back out. But I can see that they are already laying the groundwork for the sting in this case. That remark about “certified checks”. Sure. What will most likely happen is that they will send you a bad check, and insist that you cash it immediately and send them most of the money (probably by wire transfer, so it can’t be traced). The check will bounce, of course. But before it does, they will be long gone with your hard-earned cash.
Be warned that most “work at home” offers are scams. That’s unfortunate, because there are a lot of people like you who need that kind of work. Predators know that and take advantage.
You might want to report them to the FBI or your State Attorneys General before they rob other people.
Really CA is not so good compared to ICWAI ?
To become Associate member of ICAI, passing of Final exam of CA is sufficient by satisfying article ship .The three years period of article is considered as three years of experience and Associate ship is given in ICAI.
But , if you consider ICWAI the associate membership will be given if the candidate passes Final course of ICWAI and possesses three years of responsible experience. Definitely becoming Associate of ICWAI is difficult and worthy compared to three years of articles experience.
If we compare the required three years of experience for Associate Membership in ICAI and ICWAI
(a) In case of Articles of ICAI specific responsibility is not fixed on person (student) , but in case of ICWAI ( the candidate is mostly employee) the three years of experience is in a job where job responsibility is fixed.
(b) most of the times, in ICWAI the person works and deals in the system of an industry where management practices and finance functionals are present and he learns industry, management and finance practices.
(c ) The article ship experience is an experience gained as a student , i.e. . Normally understanding or working with half or zero knowledge(they are beginers in learning). In case of ICWAI the three years of experience is with in job responsibility . If it is experience as semi qualified of fully qualified , then it is the experience gained with sound subject understanding.
So in case of ICWA , the knowledge gained is more worthy and sound. The depth and scope of learning is more before becoming Associate Member in ICWAI compared to CA.
For better quality in education and knowledge , ICWAI should not think about introducing article ship in its course.
ICAI ALSO SHOULD SERIOUSLY RE-THINK ABOUT ITS ARTICLES AND PROCEDURE OF ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP . IT SHOULD EITHER AVOID ARTICLES OR SHOULD FOLLOW THE PRACTICES OF ICWAI FOR ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP.
