Top 3 Tips on Writing an Investment Banking Cover Letter

Author: Agustin Valecillos

Just like most other corporate companies, banks too receive loads of resumes and letters like investment banking cover letters on a daily basis. The truth is, with the bulk of things they receive, they don’t really have time to go through each and every letter from cover to cover. So how do you make them read yours? Here are some tips.

Keep it short

Investment banking cover letters are not entries to an essay writing competition, so don’t put any unnecessary things there that will only make your letter too lengthy to read. Include only the important things in such a way that the meat of the letter can be read within the first 30 seconds. Chances are, if the people reading your cover letter lose interest from the beginning, they won’t even finish reading the whole thing. Get to the point – who you are, what you’ve done, and why we should pay attention to you.

Follow a structure

Plan how your letter is supposed to look and sound like. Just like any sound composition, the elements in your investment banking cover letter should be coherent. Regardless if the points you want to convey are present, they won’t make a good argument if they are not presented logically. Readers of your finance cover letter have little time. Don’t expect them to have lots of patience.

Include only Relevant Information

Select the items relevant to the point you’re making. What the investment is about? How profitable do you expect it to be? There’s no need to layout the history behind the concept or even the brainstorming that led to the idea of the investment. These things you can discuss in person. They have no space in an investment banking cover letter.

I need a writing sample for a job interview, but I’m not sure what to write about.?
It’s with an Investment Banking company as a research analyst, so I thought about doing a SWOT analysis on some random company. Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have something that you wrote at your current job (that is not confidential) or a paper you wrote in school? That should suffice.

    Drug tests???
Hello. I have a job interview tomorrow for a bank. I already had the internet and phone interview and this pretty much just seals the deal. I am pretty sure they drug test, but my question is….

Is an employer allowed to ask for a urine sample, etc. the DAY OF THE INTERVIEW?

Simply because I smoke weed and I would be bummed to not get the job because of it. I haven’t smoked much lately because I knew I would have to go for an interview, but if they test me on the spot I might be in trouble.

    • Anonymous says:

They can. I have been asked to take a test the same day as an interview before. I would recommend going to a health food store or herb shop and getting a drink to mask the weed. I know they don’t work 100% but it’s better than going into the test knowing you’ll fail. If you follow the directions on the drink, they are supposed to work pretty well.

What are some sample interview questions for a job at a bank?
I have what I believe is my final interview tomorrow, and I REALLY want this job, so I want to be as prepared as possible. What are some examples of questions that banks will ask, and maybe even possible answers for those questions? It’s for a teller position FYI.

Highest number of LEGITIMATE questions will get 10 points :)

      Heres what I remember:

How would you handle an irrate customer?

      Have you ever stolen anything?

Are you good with math (they WILL give you sample questions)

Do you have good customer service skills and if so, what makes you think so?

Tell me an experience when a customer wouldn’t take no for an answer? What did you do?

      Can you multitask?

What is the difference between a withdraw and a deposit?

Are you good with following procedures? You will want to emphasize that you go by the book.

What is our idea of an ideal boss?

Will you be able to work overtime if there’s an emergency? (Many banks may keep tellers 15-20 minutes late after closing to count drawers or do an audit)

Where do you see yourself in a year (They want to make sure they can keep you for atleast 6 months to year)

How do you deal with stress?

How would your best friend describe you?

What characteristics makes you a candidate for this position?

      How do you fill downtime?

How many times a year would you say is acceptable to be late/tardy or to call in sick?

How would you make our customers feel welcome?

How would you handle an interuption from another cusomter? another employee? your manager?

How would you handle knowing that another co worker is stealing?

What frustrates you on the job?

Name a time when you gave a customer exceptional service?

What are the top 3 traits or skills every bank teller must have to excel?

How well do you understand and kno our products? You need to understand the basics of checking, savings, moey market, cd and loan accounts. How you manage your own money and finances will determine whether or not you can help the bank’s customers.

Be ready to ask questions yourself, like what is the daily routine for the average teller, can you give me an insite on the teller’s functions, what type of products and services will I be offering to current customers and potential customers?

Keep all answers brief, use descriptive words such as loyal, trustworthy, confidential, reliable…etc. reinforce your background skills and how they may apply to the position. Be specific and confident in your replies. You must be able to show that you can hande conflict, In addition, the job requires you to be detail-oriented, (you are dealing with other people’s money and must be accurate, there is no room for error)if you are not organized or good with figures and you are frustrated by the details.
Be positive in your reply and turn a negative into a positive (example: I am detail-oriented and sometimes my desire to be accurate may slow my ability to service customers quickly, however, I feel I am dealing with their monies and want to ensure accuracy and their satisfaction. I am working on being more efficient with my time.

2.I am applying for the job because my training and work experience are a perfect match . I know the banking business structure and can use my public relations skills to attract new customers and provide a welcoming friendly reception to clients who call for information about the bank. I’m a good listener, plus I can walk to work. I have lived in this community for many years.

      3. I feel that my strengths are in the area of personal interactions, communication, both oral and written, social etiquette, voice quality, diction and visually appealing. I speak good English and I am a committed employee.

My weaknesses might include letting customer vent their frustrations about bank problems to long before routing them someone is in charge of the problem and I try extremely hard to make each person feel special.
