Web 2.0: what does it really mean?

Tim O’Reilly created the term Web 2.0 in 2004 as a title for a developer conference. Actually, there is not a clear-cut definition for Web 2.0 but it typically describes a form of user-to-user communication over the internet. For unlike Web 2.0 is not a technical innovation. With offers for social interaction such as Blogger.com, Del.ico.us, facebook, Flickr, GarageBand, Habbo-Hotel, MySpace, Linkdin, Spoke, Studylounge, YouTube, Wikipedia and Xing, the Web 2.0 merely documents the realisation that the internet was always a social forum for exchanging opinions and banal experiences and never just a digital market place.

In simple term, just it needs to understand that Web 2.0 is the current version, characterized by social networks (Orkut), online multigaming, audio, video and text sharing and communities built around them, wikis, blogs and so on so forth.

Web 2.0: A super-medium of Business

Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform. It is a medium enriched with all the possible facilities of doing business such as buying/selling/auction (eBay) classifieds (Yello, CraigsList) job search engines / aggregators (Monster, Bixee). A clear picture of B2B, C2C, B2C, B2C2B markets is provided by Web 2.0.

Writing Semantic Markup for Designers

A web designer avails a lot of facility when s/he uses 2.0. To understand what useful it can be it is one of the biggest steps in realizing Web 2.0 is the transition to semantic markup. The most popular markup languages, HTML and XHTML, are used primarily for display purposes, with tags to which designers can apply styles via CSS.

Designers can describe content, but only to the extent that it fits within the (X) HTML tag set. For example, designers can mark up content as headers, paragraphs, list items, citations, and definition lists using the heading, paragraph, list, citation and defination list tags, respectively. For some simple documents, these tags are adequate to describe content effectively. For most documents, however, there is no way to accurately describe the content with the (X) HTML tags we have available. In Web 2.0, this description is not only possible, but also critical.

Providing Web Services not the Place

During the early years of the Web, before content had semantic meaning, sites were developed as a collection of “pages.” XML technologies enabled content to be shareable and transformable between different systems, and Web services provided hooks into the innards of sites. Instead of visual design being the interface to content, Web services have become programmatic interfaces to that same content. Anyone can build an interface to content on any domain if the developers there provide a Web services API.

An interesting interface built using eBay’s Web services is Andale, a site that tracks sales, prices to give auction sellers a better idea of what items are hot, and how much they have been selling for.

Online Privacy

E-commerce is a wide array of interconnected business concept in 2.0 equipped with modern technologies and cultural phenomena. With the advent of E-commerce, many opportunities are now available to business: transcending geographic boundaries being open 24 hours and expanded profiling and marketing capabilities.

For deliverance to your customer, you need to know you customer, though the customer may rather keep that information private.

An immense amount of data is being collected not only from browsing on the internet, but from credit cards, mobile phones and frequent buyer programs such as “fly buys”. Retailers may exploit the personal information every time a user uses his or her credit card. In the beginning, the Internet allowed a certain level of anonymity. With the development of 2.0, this is no longer the case. People feel susceptible to privacy invasion.

Be a driver, not a passenger

Interactive Web 2.0 applications such as online diaries (blogs, see box), online libraries (wikis) or virtual worlds have changed the way that consumers gather information. Instead of settling for the role of passive customer, the active Web2.0 user wants to contribute and discuss the latest news. Interactive platforms challenge existing business models and demand on appropriate reaction as information spreads through new channels.

Be authentic: it is an advance way of communication

Web 2.0 heralds a new era of communication with a massive increase in information supply and news, opinion and services flow directly from user to user. Financial institutions can take advantage if they stay abreast of this development. However, any Web 2.0 presence of a financial institution must be authentic and consistent with the institution’s brand and corporate culture. To leverage the potential, the need for an immaculate reputation and the right type of brand is becoming ever more important.

Conclusion:

From the concept of emerging technologies such as the Semantic Web transforming the way the Web is used (and leading to new possibilities in artificial intelligence) to the observation that increases in Internet connection speeds, modular web applications, and advances in computer graphics will play the key role in the evolution of the World Wide Web.

Now, even 2.0 is left behind the need and web-planet is looking forward for the new invention. Web 3.0 is the future, supposed to be characterised by natural language search (algorithms infirmed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) research); referred to as GGG (Global Giant Graph) by Tim Berners-Lee, who is father of www.

We have been realizing that Web 2.0 is well documented and talked about. The power of the Net reached a critical mass, with capabilities that can be done on a network level. We are also seeing richer devices over last four years and richer ways of interacting with the network, not only in hardware like game consoles and mobile devices, but also in the software layer. You do not have to be a computer scientist to create a program. We are seeing that manifest in Web 2.0 and 3.0 will be a great extension of that, a true communal medium…the distinction between professional, semi-professional and consumers will get blurred, creating a network effect of business and applications.

What is Career Development Loan?

Author: Minkesh Sood

All of us are dreaming about the perfect career, and many of us leave School College or University with towering hopes and exciting goals.
May be you have completed your graduated from high school or from university there is not assurance that you will be able to enter into the area that you want to break into, and with values and necessities getting higher and higher, it has become all the more vital to ensure that you have some sort of experience, qualification, or training in the area that you wish to enter into.
There are many types of jobs and careers where professional knowledge and training are required, and often lack of sponsorship to take a relevant course can actually obstruct you from getting into your dream occupation.
For those determined to try and get the essential guidance and qualifications under their belt, there are a couple of options available. The first, for those that are already working in the area that they want but in a different role, is to approach the employer to see if the company will fund the course in order to aid career progression.
If funding from the company is not an option then you can also consider a type of loan known as a Career Development Loan. Also known simply as CDLs, these loans are designed to provide the necessary funding to enable you to take a vocational course that can help you to get into your job or to progress within your existing career area.
A Career Development Loan is a very useful resolution for someone that wants to move their career ahead. However, whether or not to take on a Career Development Loans is a conclusion that should not be taken carelessly.
There are a number of things to consider when you are looking into a Career Development Loan, and the key one, of course, is affordability.
The great thing about these loans is that you won’t have to pay any interest for as long as your are studying, but once you have earned your qualification you will start getting charged interest. You therefore need to aim to clear the loan as early as possible in order to avoid interest payments.
You should also try and work out whether you will be able to fit your studies into your existing lifestyle and work schedule, as there is little point taking on a Career Development Loan and staring a course only to find a couple of months in that you cannot afford to put aside the time required to study, and that you will have to drop out, leaving you with the Career Development Loan to worry about.

Entry Level Resume Cover Letters Don't get Results

Author: Casey Alexander

Why do entry lever resumes and cover letters not work? Is it really the fact its entry level?  My experience has been one of mixed results.  Starting out in the job market, sometimes we don’t know how to explain the value we bring.  If any, right?  The fact is there is value in what we bring.  We just have to explain it better and with a limited amount of experience the path isn’t always clear on how to do it.

To make it short, my first entry level resume cover letters were generic. Yeah, I’ll admit it.  They were nothing more than a “Dear Sir/Madam,” line of b.s.  I didn’t say anything on the letter, plain and simple.  Now that I think about it what results could I have expected with such a nothing letter.  I gave the reader no reason to call me.  No emotion, no passion, no desire, just a bland letter saying I exist, here I am, hire me.  Of course it didn’t work.  It wasn’t until I realized this that I made a change and started to get some calls.

Entry lever cover letters aren’t especially hard to do. Here’s what I started to do to make it work.

First, no more generic resume cover letters. I realized, after reading them several times that I wouldn’t hire myself.  I focused my entry level cover letter on my strengths.  An example was I had the time to dedicate to the job.  I also had been part of an internship and had that to fall back on as experience.  I made sure the reader reviewed it on my resume.  I only had this luxury on the first two jobs I applied for.  The third wasn’t closely related to the internship program and I found myself having to rely on something other than that internship.

What I did for the other positions was more proactive. Even thought it was entry level I didn’t want my cover letter to be perceived as an entry lever resume cover letter.  To stand out I learned a little about the company.  Specifically about the work they do and any recognition awarded to the company.  It’s easier to do this now with most companies having a web site.  If this wasn’t an option I checked online for more information.

I also tried to get information from the receptionist at the company. For example, they sometimes know who will be doing the interviewing and at what time they are free.  If I knew when they’re free it gave me the opportunity to stop by at that time to deliver my resume in person.

Entry level changes once you make a personal connection with the interviewer. I know its challenging but to me it was the only way I found to get a step on the competition.  That and I found it useful to use the resume and cover letter program I bought.  I honestly felt that entry level resume cover letters didn’t work.  It wasn’t until I tried different things that I got called in for interviews.

Investment Banking Salaries: Just How High Are They?

Author: Ian Spellfield

Just how much do investment bankers actually earn? Most of the people who want to break into investment banking have no idea how much money is really involved.

Sure, the Managing Directors and other senior people make several million a year on average; group heads can make million or more. And the CEO of an investment bank can make upwards of million, with Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein making over million in 2007.

But what does an entry-level investment banker – an investment banking analyst – actually make? Making six figures as a 23-year old just out of college is nice, but if you have to work 120 hours per week, you can’t possibly be making that much per hour, right?

I honestly didn’t know, so I had to investigate this and do some math myself. Could you actually make more working at McDonald’s than you could at Goldman Sachs, at least on an hourly basis?

For investment banking analysts, the best case scenario ever happened in 2007. Base salaries were ,000 and bonuses were ,000, for a total of 0,000 in compensation. Again, not bad for a 23-year old’s first “real-world job.”

But what about the hours? Typically, entry-level bankers work around 90-100 hours per week in their first year. This could be off by a bit, but we’ll go with it for now.

With 52 weeks of work per year (nope, no vacation) and 90 hours per week, you would have earned .05 per hour in the 2006-2007 year. If you had worked 100 hours, that would have dropped to .85.

Even if you had worked 140 hours a week, every week, you would still be at .60 per hour. And realistically it’s impossible to work that much consistently, so you could have only done better than that.

But times have not always been that good. After the Nasdaq crash and at the start of the last major recession, investment banking took a turn for the worst and bonuses disappeared.

In 2001-2002, Analysts were lucky to get ,000 for their bonuses. They still worked a lot, but mostly on marketing and pitching clients rather than doing deals and bringing in revenue.

A ,000 bonus and ,000 salary means .96 per hour at 90 hours a week. Believe it or not, that’s still above McDonald’s wages and is actually not even that bad relative to a lot of jobs in the US.

But if you had worked 140 hours per week, consistently, back then? You would have made 9.62 per hour.

According to a Wiki Answers page on McDonald’s, the wage is .30/hour for those under 17 and .57/hour after “4 months of training.”

This is a very low wage, and it looks like even in the worst possible years of investment banking, hourly analyst wages never dropped this low.

Actually, the above is not strictly true. What if you earned [POST CONTENT] for the bonus and only made the base salary of ,000 while working 140 hours each week?

That would be .24 per hour. Finally: below McDonald’s wages. So theoretically it is possible to earn less than a McDonald’s worker as an investment banking analyst, though not terribly likely.

It could only happen if you worked a ridiculous amount in the very worst years of investment banking and got absolutely nothing for your bonus.

Even with a looming US recession, this scenario seems unlikely to return anytime soon. So your hourly wages as an investment banking analyst should be safe.

Resources for Students at Auto Tech Schools

Author: Andy West

If you are seeking a career in the automotive industry, going to school is an excellent way to break into the field. Auto tech schools offer a number of resources for students, helping them to find a job after graduation, or even while still in school. Read on to discover a few of the benefits you will enjoy as a student at an automotive school.

Experienced teachers
Most auto tech schools hire only the best teachers. In order to ensure their teachers really know the subject material, they look for those with automotive degrees and/or real working automotive experience. As a result, you can rest assured that your teachers are some of the best resources available to you as you learn the ropes of the field.

Strong mentoring programs
Many automotive programs understand the value of a mentor as a student gains an education and work experience. Therefore, many schools will set up a mentoring program, between new students and more experienced students, or simply between students and experienced members of the industry.

Broad availability of internships
Another advantage offered by auto tech schools is the availability of internships. Most automotive schools maintain ongoing working relationships with local automotive businesses, enabling them to quickly and easily place students in internships. Internships benefit students by providing valuable on the job training, and some even give students credit toward their degree.

Guaranteed job placement
Many programs will guarantee job placement after graduation. Job placement services are one of the many benefits a high quality, established automotive school can offer. Between the connections the school has with local shops, garages, and dealerships, and the aid of the school’s best resume writers, students should have no trouble finding work in this competitive field.

Solid school reputation
One of the benefits to attending one of the top auto tech schools is that you carry with you the value of their reputation, every time you present your resume or tell a customer where you learned your trade. The presence of a top school on your resume could even make the difference between landing a job and losing it to another candidate. Therefore, a school’s reputation must be counted among one of the resources it offers you as a graduate.

Financial aid
Going to school is a financial burden for many people, but it doesn’t have to stop you from getting the education you want and need. Many facilities will offer financial aid for students who cannot easily afford to put themselves through school. Financial aid is therefore a resource that makes an education possible for many people for whom it would not have been otherwise.

There are many more resources that auto tech schools can offer to their students, but the above resources are the most common. If you are unsure what resources a certain educational program can offer to you, the best way to find out is to browse the school’s website or contact them directly.

Looking Back At Essex Jobs

Author: highposition

Finding a job now is much more difficult than it perhaps was over a hundred years ago, with more people trying to gain employment in a specified profession. Those who have grown up in Essex are more likely to branch away from this county, in towards London and surrounding areas. Jobs in London tend to pay extra due to the outer London weighting and because it is a large city they will offer more diverse job opportunities.

The demand for Essex jobs have increased dramatically over the last five years, which made finding work much more difficult. There are more people involved in skilled trading rather than academic based employment. The rise in people opting for academia as opposed to skilled work has resulted in the rising increase in wages for people with skilled employment. Plumbers alone could earn around 60, 000 pounds, whereas a new graduate would be lucky if they found themselves work earning them a minimum of 20, 000 pounds, which will slowly increase each year.

This is not to say that working in a skilled trade is the way forward above academia, on the contrary working in the skilled trade will mean that the individual will have to work harder to maintain their client base and actively find work. Working in this field can give you the opportunity to become self-employed, freelance or work under an agency/employer. The latter will make it easier to find new clients and find work more regularly.

Essex jobs during the reign of Elizabeth I consisted mainly of the Bay and Say trading, better known as wool trading. The art of weaving was introduced by the Flemish people, which the monarch of the time encouraged to be taught across the county. This gave rise to more job opportunities, not just in trading, but also in creating new garments and materials. Clothing was distributed in the major towns such as Colchester, Braintree, Dedham, Coggeshall, Halsted and Bocking.

The major clothing towns were a significant advantage for many families, as it allowed employment in weaving, spinning, sewing and more. The garments were sought after by Royalty and the wealthy, making Essex a popular choice for trading and making money. Essex jobs at this point in time were plentiful in agriculture, garment production, goods trading and other skilled work. However, it would not be until the mid 1500′s to the 1700′s, that the production of gunpowder began to take precedence over the skilled trading work.

The production of gunpowder was the start of many changes to come in Essex, namely within the employment industry. Much of Essex jobs consisted of working within the gunpowder industry which became an extremely lucrative money making trade. By 1900 it had allocated 1200 jobs, with much of the production contributing towards much of the national requirements. This was furthermore successful soon after the introduction of the railway system.

The railway system and transportation links changed the face of employment, making it easier for people to transport goods to major cities quickly. Furthermore, Essex was also thriving in the production of silk and crepe, opening up 2000 jobs to people. This attracted furthermore monarchs in purchasing robes and expensive silk garments.

Modern day Essex is still abundant in skilled work, which includes clothing production, trading of goods and supplies, and constructions work. Much of these have progressed further into major corporate companies and industries. Most of Essex has become commercialised and much more diverse in employment opportunities, allowing more people to take the root into academia. However, they have over the years increased the earning potential for most first-time employees and trainees, through incorporating the skilled trade with corporate companies.

Entry-Level Jobs 101: 4 Must-Know Tips

Author: Ed Dearmin

In order to enjoy all of these, one must submit himself or herself to an entry-level type of job. This refers to a job that requires minimal skills and expertise with no experience requirement needed.

Because of its nature, entry-level jobs are characterized by low salary, require physical work, and sometimes need field work.

Most often than not, people who are into entry-level jobs have very low hourly rates and may or may not entail insurance.
